Elephant Hawk Moth

We had a rather large dead moth by our shed the other day (I think the cats had had a go at it!) but it was one we hadn’t really seen before.  Here is the photo I took of it.

I ended up tweeting Chris Packham (@ChrisGPackham) as he is our favourite wildlife expert (we always watch Springwatch and Autumnwatch and his other nature shows!) and he tweeted back to say that it was an Elephant Hawk Moth. Thanks Chris! 😉

None of us like moths very much, especially the big ones, but we had never seen one like this before so we thought it was quite interesting. Click here to view more information on this type of moth from the The Wildlife Trusts website.

Here is a photo of what the Elephant Hawk Moth would look like if it was alive.  It is actually a very pretty moth and not dull like a lot of other Moths!
